Hi mates!
Today I’ve decided to give a go to my site that I’ll be talking about in this post.
Back in December I’ve started my SEO experiment with 4 different domains targeting single keywords plus subset of long tail variations. However, at that time, Dec 5 or 6 maybe, I also brainstormed some keywords for a health related niche, since I had content for a ClickBank product in this niche. One of the keywords seemed like a good one to target so I’ve decided to buy a domain name with this exact keyword in it.
The whole process took me about 20 minutes to complete – buying domain, setting up hosting, installing WP theme+plugins. The only optimization I did was filling in meta tags in all-in-one SEO plugin and adding title with my keyword in it.
After completing this work, I simply pinged the domain in pingoat.com (or pingomatic.com) and forgot about it
In 2 weeks after that, as I was checking my position for 4 sites, I also decided to check this domain. I found this domain ranking on poition 12 in google. As you can see from the screenshot below, the position climbed to top 6 (!) without me lifting a finger to build some backlinks or add content.
Now the site is down to position 12 again, but let’s take a look at the site =)
I’ve removed the actual keywords for the privacy purposes, but you can see the keyword in blog title, admin name, and meta description also has the keyword and some related keywords in it.
OK, at this point you may think that I’m just bragging – no, don’t really need this, so now the most interesting part of this post – let’s see the competition data for this keyword, since what I’m sharing here may simply turn into the real SEO business, and I’m serious.
First, among 10 keywords that I analysed, I found this one as interesting in terms of daily traffic:
Notice, in-quotes competition is over 38000 results, and intitle is 11900. Let’s now move on and see the actual competition analysis tab in market samurai:
Again, the actual sites would give away this niche, but it’s not necessary to show the actual sites. Take a look at the pages PRs, one 1 of them is PR6 (this is Ezinearticles by the way), the rest is PR 0-PR1. Next important thing – # of backlinks to the pages ranked in top 10. 28 backlinks is a max.
Domain backlinks is not that important here, since google ranks pages, not domains. Of course, if you own Ezinearticles, you may never bother about your competition, but we’re here to dominate as fast and as high as possible, without any hard work (like my SEO experiment
))))
Domain age – note that some of the domains aren’t even showing age, this means they’re fresh – another good sign.
Gov and .edu backlinks – happily, no one has them here
On-page factors – a couple of sites here seem to be optimised on-page, but not ALL of them, so I have a chance
By the way, my site #4 is out of top 100 regularly, despite the backlinks I’m sending to it. One of the reasons is heavy on-page optimized competition in top 10 (and maybe in top 100)
The sites appearing in top 10: ezinearticles, hubpages, yahoo answers, not optimized subpages from some related big sites, and a couple of sites with keyword in domain name. All of this is a good sign to target this keyword.
Never Rely on Tools Alone
What I do is of course check the keyword in market samurai and other tools to get a rough and quick estimation of potential, competition etc. However, what I found that tools may be wrong sometimes, and dead wrong… Because now I’ve checked the actual google usa SERPs and found this:
The site is on position #4 already so I’m going to write the content and monetize it a bit
If you happened to follow my SEO experiment, all I can say – it’s worth spending 1-2 days looking for proper keywords or we may end up spending MONTHS of our time struggling to promote our sites to the top 10, just to see them get kicked out next day.
I hope this post will be valuable for you, just like my SEO experiment was for me, that ended with this surprising outcome.
These 4 sites are still dancing, bouncing, and even losing their positions, despite all my daily efforts.Well I’ll keep promoting them until some solid and high positions, however, thanks God for this extra step I’ve made that helped me discover the whole new way of doing SEO – the key is keyword research and analysis.
I’ve made 4 wrong choices of keywords for my SEO experiment, and 1 right choice. I ended up spending lots of time promoting my 4 sites and none of them is in top 5 yet (only 1 top 9 poition). They’re all having content (I paid for), affiliate links setup etc and not a single sale. At the same time after 2 weeks my empty site was already in top 12, and now it’s in top 4 and I’m missing the money from traffic it gets.
Choose you keywords wisely, and success will come.
