Keyword research Google Cash Style

As a mmember of Cris Carpenter’s Google Cash Detective, I recently watched his great video on how he does keyword research on a product he’s going to promote.

There are so many approaches to doing a keyword research, that I’ve decided to put them to test and see how it all works :)

So, here’s the Google Cash style of keyword research.

First, we take keywords from the merchant. We can do it 3 ways:

  1. Go to the source code for the product sales page (or other pages) and grab keywords found in <title>, <description> and <keywords> tags.
  2. We’re advised to check product’s affiliate page as many merchants on Clickbank allow their affiliates predefined lists of related keywords that we can use for SEO and PPC purposes.
  3. If there are no keywords offered on affiliate page or the merchant’s site isn’t SEOed and doesn’t have <description> and <keywords> tags (which is pretty common for CPA landing pages), we’re supposed to send merchant email asking him for the list of recommended keywords.

Second – brainstorm horisontally. This is where we get the most of our keywords. Here are the methods:

  1. Look at product websites and write down keywords related to the offer right from the sales page.
  2. Brainstorm keywords based on customer’s need or problem (like for TruthAboutAbs product Cris brainstormed “get six pack abs”, “get strong stomach”, “ab exercises”, “lose belly fat”, “lose love handles”)
  3. Go to Amazon.com and find book covers related to our product/offer and grab keyword ideas from there. Also get a list of book names (we can bid on that as well)
  4. Get a list of similar product names. Go to Alexa.com and type in the domain of your product and then click “Related links” to discover domains of products related to yours – write down related product names

Third, use Google Keyword Tool and spy on your competition. We can do it 2 ways:

  1. Do a search by URL – type in URL of our product/offer and you’ll get a list of keywords related to the theme of our product/offer. Here we choose keywords that are most relative to our product and have good search volume, like over 10000 searches a month. Chris recommends to choose different related keywords, not just a keyword and it’s all possible variations.
  2. (Optional) Go to Google Cash Detective and search by affiliate URL, and then check all affiliates with PPC direct linking campaigns promoting our product. Choose keywords with high PI (Profitability Index) and good search volume (over 10000/month preferrably)

Please note that at this stage we only gathered, collected keywords, as Chris says, we created our “master keyword list”. The next stage is picking keywords that we’ll put to test in our real PPC campaign.

The idea is simple – take our master keyword list and pick out most relevant and highest traffic keywords, preferrably 10-20 to 100 keywords at most. We also want to include so called “low hanging fruit” keywords here like product names, domain names and related or competitor products names. These keywords have a high possibility of conversion.

Here’s how Chris does that:

We go to Google Keyword Tool, paste in keywords from our master keyword list and click “filter” and “don’t show ideas for new keywords…” We want only to see how many searches our master keywords get, and pick the ones with good search volume.

Next, we just pick 10 to 20 keywords and we/re ready to create our test campaign. During the keywords collection stage, Chris also recommends to create a list of possible negative keywords, that will prevent our ads from showing for these terms, like “free abs exercises” – we don’t want to show our ad to people searching for free exercises, as we know they will not buy our product, they don’t have ‘buying” intent.

Ok, the post seems to be long and theoretical, but in the next post I’ll put this method to test and go a real keyword research exactly Google Cash style ;) So stay tuned!
